Brazil is the 1st country to produce Formula 1 trophies using recycled plastic for the grand prize
"Bringing the universe of recycling to this world level event shows the commitment of Braskem and its partners with sustainable development and the pursuit of engagement of society in the correct disposal of plastic waste", says Bernardo Gradin, president of Braskem, responsible for the production of recycled resin trophy to Brazil F1 GP at Interlagos (SP). The unique project is being developed jointly by Romi companies, manufacturer of industrial machinery, and Fortymil, distributor of resins and plastics recycler, besides the Social-Environmental Institute of Plastic (Plastivida) and the Cooperative of Selective Collection of Capela do Socorro (Coopercaps) specialized in collecting recyclable materials.
During every day of the event, a mini recycling plant will be in operation to retrieve the discarded plastic, turning it into trophies and giving as a prize to the winners of the competition in Formula 1. This operation involves the following steps: selective collection and sorting to be performed by the Cooperative; and milling, drying, extrusion and machining of the trophy. The process for the production of recycled resin is under the command of Fortymil, the machining of the trophy is headed by Romi and the Braskem technical crew is managing the whole process for the production of the trophy. The Coopercaps also take care of the surplus collected, to promote their reuse for other purposes.
"With this action, besides showing in practice that the plastic present in our day to day, is 100% recyclable and 100% reusable, we also demonstrate the importance of selective collection to minimize environmental impacts", said Jorge Soto, director of the Sustainable Development of Braskem, noting that today, recycling is a subject of increasing relevance to environmental and social aspects. According to data from Plastivida, Brazil currently recycles 21% of plastic produced, while the European Union average is 18.3% and Germany average, the world record for mechanical recycling, is 31%.
The trophy this year will be a reedition of the design developed in 2008 by the Brazilian master of architecture, Oscar Niemeyer, for its beauty and originality. The design was inspired by the columns of the presidential palace and, according to its creator, followed the same path of development of a work of art, designed to arouse emotion, surprise and, this time, with the advantage of recycling.

Romi - Indústrias Romi is a leader in the Brazilian market of machinery and equipment. Listed in the Bovespa since March 2007, it makes machine tools, especially for lathes and machining centers, injection machines and plastic blowing machines, and pieces of cast iron, provided raw or machined. Its products and services are present on all continents and are used by many different production sectors such as automotive, consumer goods in general, of industrial machines and equipment and agricultural machinery and implements.
Fortymil - Fortymil is a company with more than 40 years of activity in the sector of the plastics industry and one of the first industries in Latin America to have all of its recycling process certified by ISO 9000. It has a plant for recycling of plastics, in Itatiba (SP), which manufactures recycled and industrial resins as well as compounds and micronized material, given all the national territory. It also provides services to third parties of granulation, micronization, dyeing and additives, as well as marketing virgin resins as an official distributor of Braskem and Innova. By adding masterbatch, pigments, additives such as anti-static and anti-uv, flow aids, mineral filler, anti-flame and others, the company is able to produce compounds of high added value intended for the automotive, white goods, parts and technical films, wires and cables, and other segments that require high standards of quality and reliability.
Plastivida - Entity that represents the productive chain of the petrochemical sector, to publicize the importance of plastics in modern life and promote their environmentally friendly use, while it prioritizes social responsibility initiatives. It is part of the Plastics Global Meeting, World Meeting of similar institutions of the European Community, United States, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Argentina, Australia and China, sharing new knowledge and trends.
Coopercaps - The Cooperative of Selective Collection of Capela do Socorro (Coopercaps) manages the central sorting, processing, storage and marketing of Capela do Socorro, located in Vila da Paz (Interlagos). Its activities were initiated in December 2003. Currently, Coopercaps has 84 members, working in two shifts and handling a daily average of 14 tons of recyclable materials. It is subject to Limpurb, through the Department of Services, which provides a complete infrastructure for its operation. The door to door collection is conducted in more than 900 streets in the region.

The Braskem commitment to sustainable development and the reduction of emissions of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is part of the strategic management of the company, focused on business sustainability within economic, social and environmental dimensions. Besides showing continued improvement in its eco-efficiency indicators over the seven years of existence, the company developed in 2007, at the Center for Technology and Innovation of Braskem, the first certified green polyethylene in the world made from a 100% renewable ethanol.
This project received that same year one of the most important international awards in the industry, in Europe, the Bioplastic Awards. The Braskem pioneering is the result of consistent investments in technological research. The focus in the area of innovation allows bigger competitiveness on the whole productive chain of petrochemistry and plastics, giving shape to the dream of the Customer.
With a team of 170 experts, active in research and development of R$ 330 million, the company has over 240 patents registered in Brazil and abroad. Besides the green polyethylene, Braskem was the first company in the world to make the polypropylene with raw material 100% renewable on a pilot scale.

Braskem recently released its Manifesto on Climate Change, in which it commits itself publicly to strengthen its activities for the benefit of sustainable development, to reduce the impacts of global warming on the planet. The document provides, in a transparent way, the commitment of the company and actions that have been taken to reduce the emission of gases that cause the greenhouse effect on the planet and support sustainable development.
Braskem is the leader in thermoplastic resins in Latin America and the third largest producer in the Americas. With 18 plants located throughout Brazil, the company produces more than 11 million tons of thermoplastic resins and other petrochemical products.
