Braskem develops new PP resin for foam production
The material is lightweight, durable and recyclable and can be used in the automotive, industrial, appliances, packaging and construction markets
São Paulo, September 6, 2016 - Braskem, the largest manufacturer of thermoplastic resins in the Americas, presents to the Brazilian market a new polypropylene resin (HMS-PP), with High Melt Strength properties. With the product, which was specially developed for the production of high-performance foams and has versatility as one of its features, the Company intends to establish partnerships for the development of new applications, targeting the automotive, industrial, packaging, construction and appliances markets.
HMS-PP allows the development of lighter, safer and more sustainable solutions, being indicated, for example, for internal vehicle linings. The new product is able to withstand temperatures up to 100°C without deforming and allows the production of foams with broad application versatility in the density range, at 35-300 kilograms per cubic meter. Moreover, HMS-PP can be recycled, thus comprising a more sustainable alternative.
"Developing a high-tech resin demonstrates not only the large capacity of Braskem to innovate but also to listen and understand the needs of customers by offering differentiated and sustainable solutions. The unique properties of this new resin provides a large variety of applications and the opportunity to develop, together with the chain, increasingly effective and versatile products," said Walmir Soller, Director of the Polypropylene Business at Braskem.
Studies for the development of HMS-PP were carried out at Braskem's Innovation & Technology Center, in the petrochemical hub of Triunfo, Rio Grande do Sul, as well as the Pittsburgh Innovation Center, in the United States, which recently started a pilot-scale production line for foams to support new developments.
The official launch of the new product will be held at Feira K, the world's largest trade show of the plastics and rubber industry, held in Germany, on October 19-26.
