Launch of Primer aims to encourage reduction of water losses in the cities

Publication of the "Less Loss, More Water Movement" presents successful initiatives undertaken by municipalities

São Paulo, October 3, 2016 - To encourage concrete actions for the reduction of water losses in the distribution system, the "Less Loss, More Water Movement" - an initiative by the UN Global Compact Brazil Network, led by Braskem and Sanasa - launched on Tuesday (4), a primer presenting cases of Brazilian cities that have dramatically reduced waste.

The material will be presented during the seminar "Dialogue on the Planet: Partnerships for Sustainable Development," held by Furnas and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), in Botafogo (RJ). The event aims to encourage discussions on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In line with SDG 6, which proposes "to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all," the primer will present measures taken by the cities of Campinas (SP) Limeira (SP), Maringá (PR) and Campo Grande (MS ) to reduce distribution losses, thus improving access to clean water for its inhabitants and favoring all users of their respective drainage basins.

In general, these cities have implemented improvements to their systems for measurement (macro-measurement / micro-measurement) and monitoring of the distribution network, pressure reduction and leakage control, and replacement of network equipment. As an example, half of the losses in the Municipality of Maringá were due to defective water meters, with another 50 percent due to leaks and frauds in the water distribution network. To change this reality, they replaced water meters for more modern versions, replaced old pipelines, and instituted a system for monitoring and inspection of leaks. The changes allowed the city to reduce by 64% the daily water losses.

"Optimizing water management and improving the urban distribution system in Brazil is of paramount importance. In Brazil, we lose annually roughly 37% of all treated water, which results in a loss of R$8 billion to the public coffers and a greater struggle for access to water within the drainage basin," said Mario Pino, Sustainable Development Manager of Braskem.

Public and private support

Following the purpose of SDG 17, which aims to "strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development," the Movement has the support of more than 50 companies and now seeks the commitment of public officials with the "Letter to Mayors," contemplating the reduction of water losses in their administrations.

Before the elections, twelve candidates from ten cities signed the document. The cities of São Paulo (SP), Campinas (SP), Piracicaba (SP), Piracaia (SP), Caraguatatuba (SP), Atibaia (SP), Maceió (AL), and Porto Alegre (RS) endorsed the document.

UN Global Compact Brazil Network

Launched in 2000, the UN Global Compact is the world's largest voluntary corporate sustainability initiative. It brings together over 13,000 signatories - including companies (small, medium and large) and organizations - in over 160 countries with the aim of aligning the companies to ten principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment, and fight against corruption. Established in 2003 and currently the fourth largest network in the world, with almost 800 signatories, the Global Compact Brazil Network is linked to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The initiative promotes collaborative activities led by the private sector through the establishment of partnerships with various sectors, such as civil society, governments, and UN agencies. For the signatories, access is provided to information, training and networking opportunities, in addition to the opportunity to participate in Thematic Groups - Water, Agriculture and Food, Anti-Corruption, Human Rights and Labor, and Energy and Climate. The Global Compact has the challenge of promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. Learn more: www.pactoglobal.org.br.
