The strength of chemicals focused on business sustainability
Braskem, the leading producer of thermoplastic resins in the Americas and the world’s largest producer of biopolymers, is committed to its strategic goal of becoming the world leader in sustainable chemicals by 2020 and innovating to better serve people. In line with this strategy, the development of new polymers from renewable raw materials is one of Braskem’s key vectors.
On this front, the company inaugurated, in September 2010, an industrial unit producing 200 kton/year of ethylene made from sugarcane ethanol, which is transformed into an equal volume of green polyethylene. Braskem also announced its project to build a green propylene plant for the production of polypropylene from renewable resources. The project is in the basic engineering phase and should produce at least 30 ktons/year, with the plant expected to become operational in 2013.
Braskem is the largest resin producer in the Americas, with 31 industrial plants across Brazil and the United States. The company achieved this position when, in early 2010, it acquired the Brazilian petrochemical producer Quattor and the polypropylene operations of the U.S. company Sunoco Chemicals. Today the company has the capacity to produce annually some 6.5 million tons of thermoplastic resins (polyethylene, polypropylene and PVC). Including basic petrochemical products, annual production exceeds 15 million tons. In 2010, Braskem recorded revenue of R$ 34.7 billion.
