Goals and Initiatives

In addition to having a solid management base and a strong entrepreneurial culture, to make progress with this strategy we have set seven macro-objectives that link development and sustainability. These are:

  • Being a benchmark for Chemical Safety;
  • Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions;
  • Increasing water efficiency;
  • Increasing energy efficiency;
  • Being the largest producer of thermoplastic resins made from renewable raw materials;
  • Helping reduce the impacts of post-consumption plastic waste;
  • Being recognized as an important agent of human development.

A number of initiatives are being carried out for each of these objectives, and others are planned to take place by 2020. These initiatives include the following:

  • CHEMICAL SAFETY

    Registration of Braskem products on the European REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemical Substances) system;

    Lead the International Councils of Chemical Associations' (ICCA) Global Product Strategy Project in South America to provide information about risks to people and the environment which result from using chemical products;

    Adaptation and preparation of information sheets on safety (FISPQs) according to the NBR 1425/2009 model, with a warning regarding the danger of some Braskem substances, in order to conform to standards for the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for the Classification and Labeling of Chemicals in Brazil.

    2011 - 2015: lead Global Product Strategy implementation in South America;

    2011 - 2015: continual improvement of its Risk Rating so as to attain a minimum average of 90 points so that all Braskem plants are "above standard";

    2011 - 2014: replacing Hg and asbestos cells;

    2011 - 2015: keeping waste generation stable and remain a benchmark in the sector.

    Braskem as a benchmark for the responsible use and production of chemical products around the world;

    Not using or producing substances included on global blacklists.

  • GREENHOUSE GASES (GHG)

    Attain a 11.6% reduction on the indicator for GHG emission intensity in 2008;

    Start to use sugarcane as a raw material to produce ethane, which will prevent the emission of up to 750,000 tons of CO2 per year.

    2011 - 2015: improve emission intensity;

    2011 - 2015: CDP improvement in the transparency and results categories;

    2011 - 2013: obtain Braskem's first carbon credits.

    Attain the same intensity of GHG emissions as leading large companies around the world;

    Become a major sequestrator of indirect GHG emissions because of renewable raw material use.

  • WATER EFFICIENCY

    Reduced wastewater generation by 12% in relation to the previous year. There was a 36% reduction in wastewater generation between 2002 and 2010.

    Reduce water consumption by 23% and wastewater generation by 20% (in relation to 2010) at Braskem by adopting reuse projects;

    Continuity of remediation projects.

    Braskem as a benchmark for using water resources, re-using 100% of the water in water stress locations.

  • ENERGY EFFICIENCY

    Reduced the intensity of its energy consumption by 6% in relation to 2009.

    Continue to streamline energy consumption.

    Reach the same levels of energy consumption as leading major chemical companies around the world;

    Become an important user of energy from a recyclable source.

  • RENEWABLE RAW MATERIALS

    Started to use sugarcane ethanol as a raw material for producing ethylene, with the inauguration of a green ethylene plant in Triunfo (Rio Grande do Sul);

    Announced the construction of a green propylene plant;

    Established a code of conduct for its ethanol suppliers which was implemented for 70% of its supplies.

    Development of research on alternative technologies and renewable raw materials;

    Implement a sustainable development management process at 90% of ethanol suppliers by 2013;

    2011: determine the feasibility of new green investments;

    2013: start the first green polypropylene plant.

    Be the largest world player in biopolymer production.

  • POST-CONSUMPTION

    Invested in supporting technical development which covers 38 selection and mechanical plastic recycling centers in Rio Grande do Sul;

    One of the founders of the Plastivida Socio-environmental Institute, which works to promote recycling;

    Started actions to introduce social participation programs which incorporate recycling in the Brazilian states of Alagoas, Bahia, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

    Develop a business and partner model for the first energy recycling unit in Brazil;

    Bolster the recycling chain in the states where we operate in Brazil.

    Braskem as an important player for solving the plastic waste problem;

    Mechanical plastic recycling reaches similar levels as those in developed countries, which is currently at an average of 35%;

    Energy recycling of urban solid waste becomes a reality.

  • PEOPLE

    Launched skill development programs for members;

    Made private social investments;

    Prioritized relationships with communities in the vicinity of its units;

    Started to introduce a System of Excellence in Health, Safety and the Environment (SEMPRE) at the units acquired by Sunoco Chemicals and Quattor.

    Conclude the SEMPRE introduction phase at the acquired assets;

    Include social responsibility in the SEMPRE Program, based on Corporate Social Responsibility Standard ISO26000;

    Extend the social participation program at a national level by strengthening the mechanical plastic recycling chain;

    Reduce the rate of accidents and new occupational illnesses, remaining a benchmark in the sector;

    Revise private social investment programs (ISPs), so as to align them with Braskem's main contributions to improving the Human Development Index (HDI), Global Pact and Millennium Goals in each location where the company is active.

    Braskem starts to be recognized by society as an active company which contributes to improving human development in the locations where it organizes projects;

    Braskem is recognized as the best company to work at in the sector.
