ABOUT BRASKEM
INNOVATION
Among the patents recently deposited, there is the first one by a Brazilian petrochemical involving nanotechnology. Braskem developed a process for the production of a polypropylene additived with nanoparticles. This technology gives more shine, rigidity, and resistance to the resin that will be used for food packaging production. In 2007, Braskem deposited a new patent for the PVC production with the addition of nanoparticles directly in the reactor during the resin manufacturing process.

Some of the projects developed in partnership with customers resulted in new applications for certain resins like, disposable glasses of polypropylene, substituting the polystyrene, pots of polypropylene for cream cheese instead of using glass pots and the use of polypropylene fiber in tiles and water reservoirs. Another innovation of Braskem is the Injection Stretch Blow Molding (ISBM) technology for the production of polypropylene bottles of non-sparkling drinks.

Besides technical solutions to respond some of the customers’ needs, the research and development work of the company resulted in important new products that have been seen in the market in the last years. Among them, there are two products that were imported before: Braskem Flexus resin, polyethylene with metalocen technology for especial packaging that demand more shine and mechanical resistance, and Braskem Symbios, sealant   in propylene bio-oriented that guarantees a better performance in the packaging closing process.

Other innovation developed by Braskem was the resin UTEC, Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene for revetment of high impact, used in dumps of trucks and loading wagons, helmets and bullet proof jackets. Braskem is the second largest producer of this resin in the world and with this product the company won the 2004 Abiquim Technology Award. It is one of the most important prizes given by the chemical industry to the most innovative companies of the sector.

It’s also worth mentioning, the resin Idealis, a polyethylene of high performance. The Idealis is used in the production of bases for cutting in the industry of food and bases for assembling in the automotive industry.
