Environmental Education Center Vila Pinto This is a social inclusion initiative through the incentive for selective garbage collection and the sale of plastic waste in Vila Pinto, a poor region in the periphery of Porto Alegre, which ensures a source of income to the community’s inhabitants. The project has the support of the Federal Technological Education Center (Cefet-RS) in improving material separation processes, increasing the collectors’ earnings. The proposal is to also use Cefet’s experience and knowledge to develop an effective screening model that can be replicated by other communities. Alongside the Vila Pinto Environmental Education Center - CEA, which is a Non-governmental Organization today, there is a cultural center with several pieces of equipment intended to help in youth formation. The most prominent are a computer science telecenter where the visitors learn to deal with programs and expand their knowledge about reality with free Internet access. The place also offers sewing, mosaics, graffiti, dance and children’s theater workshops, among others. When it celebrated its 10th anniversary in December 2005, the CEA inaugurated a movie theater and a library made with donations given by Braskem members.
