Green Belt
This a project dedicated to the preservation of the green areas around the industrial units of Braskem and it is also focused on the environmental education. The Green Belt in the unit of Maceió, in Alagoas, receives around 15 thousand people every year. In Camaçari, Bahia, where most of Braskem factories are, the company maintains a Conservationist Center dedicated to environmental education as well.
The Green Belt project originated from the desire of the company to recover an area in process of degradation around its facilities of chlorine-soda in Maceió, Alagoas. The project is installed in an area of 150 hectares. 20 hectares of this area are in a reserve of environmental protection and it was created in 19 December, 1985 by the State Law 6.730 for environmental preservation.
180 seeds of 200 species and around 300 animals like monkeys, crocodiles, peacocks and others can be found in this reserve. The investments in the Green Belt totalize US$ 8 million and nowadays R$ 200 thousand are spent every year for keeping the project.
The Green Belt received the IBAMA register of a Conservationist Center of Brazilian Wild Fauna, a demonstration that the technological progress and environment care can live in harmony. Nowadays, the Green Belt is a research center that has partnerships with universities, with EMBRAPA (Brazilian Company of Agriculture and Cattle Research) and other companies of the region. Furthermore, the Center of Environmental Education of the Green Belt has been working since 1999.
