Alive Lake
This program takes place in Alagoas and it involves the communities around the lakes Mundaú and Manguaba. It intends to generate a new attitude in children, young adults, teachers and communitarian leaderships regarding the environment.
In partnership with the Education Secretaries of Maceió, Marechal Deodoro and the state of Alagoas, the program Alive Lake plays important roles in two fronts. One happens in the scholar venue, through the continuous formation of teachers in environment education and sustainable development and through the transmission of this knowledge to the students.
The other front works with the professionalizing workshops. One of them is about the filé handcraft, a traditional technique for producing laces in a variety of colors and shapes. This way of producing laces was almost in extinction in the region and now it is part of the routine of the community again. Another workshop is about sewing and it intends to add value to the work of craftswomen from Pontal, a local cooperative is exporting their production to the United States.
There are several other workshops like the apiculture and the hydroponics that happen in schools of the community and promote the production of food for school students. Recycling notions are always present in the projects: for instance, the participants use PET bottles like recipients for the seeds. The reutilization of PET is also motivated in the workshop of gardening that teaches theory and practice, helping with planning, planting, and landscape techniques.
There are also free workshops of serigraphy and English language for teenagers and adults that live in Pontal da Barra, or for those who work in the commerce and with services for tourists. The courses are given in partnership with the Casa de Cultura Britânica (British Culture House) an institution connected to the Federal University of Alagoas - UFAL.
