Braskem's commitment will enable EDF Renewables to expand its wind capacity in Bahia

Braskem has undertaken a commitment to purchase wind power for 20 years under an agreement estimated at R$400 million.

Braskem, the largest petrochemical company in the Americas and the world's leading biopolymer producer, will invest in buying wind power, which consequently will help to ensure the viability of the project to expand the Folha Larga Complex, which is being developed in Bahia state by EDF Renewables do Brasil . Braskem has undertaken a commitment to purchase wind power for 20 years under an agreement estimated at R$400 million. This new renewable energy farm, which is located in the city of Campo Formoso, 350 kilometers northwest from the state capital Salvador, will help make Bahia a leader in renewable energy in the coming years.

The Folha Larga project was made viable by long-term power purchase sales in government auctions and by the execution of Braskem's commitment in the free market.

"The state of Bahia has become a national reference in renewable energy," said Gustavo Checcucci, Braskem's energy director. "We are doing our part to support the sector's development. By investing in a clean and sustainable energy matrix, we will reduce our CO2 emissions by 325,000 tons over the contract's duration," explained Checcucci.

Today, Bahia has 113 wind farms in operation, with installed capacity of approximately 3.0 GW, according to data from the Electric Power Trading Chamber (CCEE) . Investments already made in the sector during the year through energy auctions should increase the state's installed wind power capacity by 622 MW by 2024. The Campo Formoso region, where the wind farm is located, has strong and constant winds, which is highly favorable for the efficiency of wind power generation projects.

"This first private power purchase agreement signed with Braskem, one of the country's largest consumers, demonstrates EDF Renewables' competitiveness in the free market and its aspiration to position itself as one of the market's key players," said Paulo Abranches, CEO of EDF Renewables in Brazil. Established three years ago in Brazil, EDF Renewables is one of the country's leaders in renewable energy, with around 1 GW in wind and solar power projects, already considering the projects in operation or under construction. In Bahia, the French company also has the Ventos da Bahia Wind Power Complex, located in the municipalities of Bonito and Mulungu do Morro, with installed capacity of 183 MW.
