Braskem and Casa dos Ventos announce agreement to supply wind energy to prevent 700 thousand tons of CO2 emissions
The partnership provides for energy supply by Casa dos Ventos for 20 years, reinforcing Braskem's strategy to expand its renewable energy matrix

Braskem signs an agreement to buy wind energy from Casa dos Ventos, one of the pioneers and major investors in project development in this segment in Brazil. The corporate electric power agreement (PPA) is tied to the construction of a new wind farm which is intended for the supply of renewable energy for 20 years, preventing emissions of approximately 700 thousand tons of CO2over that period. Casa dos Ventos will be responsible for directing the investment for the implementation of the farm.
"This is our fourth agreement for long-term purchase of renewable energy and the largest in volume to date. As a result, we will contribute to the construction of another energy generation farm and we reinforce our strategy of having an increasingly renewable energy matrix in our operation and in the operation of the petrochemical chain, reassuring our commitment for sustainable development. We are committed to becoming a carbon neutral company by 2050, and aim to reduce our emissions by 15% by 2030, and this is one more step in that journey," says Gustavo Checcucci, Energy Director at Braskem.
In addition to buying energy, Braskem has the option to acquire a shareholding in the wind farms, conditioned to the approval by the competent governance bodies, enabling the self-production scheme. "We have developed a customized model, whereby we are responsible for the construction and operation of wind farms, but we leave open the possibility that are partners may become shareholders in these ventures in the future. It is a model that results in benefits to all, especially for the country, by stimulating an energy transition model for large consumers," explains Lucas Araripe, New Business Director at Casa dos Ventos.
Commitment to renewable energy
In 2020, Braskem announced two other important agreements for the purchase of renewable energy. The first agreement with the French multinational company Voltalia , disclosed in March, will enable the expansion of the Serra do Mar solar complex in Rio Grande do Norte, with a 270 MW generation capacity. The second agreement, announced in June, is a partnership with Canadian Solar and enables the construction of a solar energy plant in northern Minas Gerais, with installed capacity of 152 MWp, enough to supply a city of 430 thousand inhabitants.
At the end of 2018, the company had signed an agreement with EDF Renewable for the purchase of wind energy, also for a period of two decades. With these four agreements, with Casa dos Ventos, Voltalia, Canadian and EDF Renewable, Braskem estimates that it will cut approximately 1.5 million tons of CO2 emissions.
Commitment to Carbon Neutral Circular Economy
Braskem announced its public commitment to increase its efforts to become a carbon neutral company by 2050. To achieve this goal, the company's strategy considers initiatives for carbon reduction, compensation and capture, as well as expanding its I'm greenT portfolio, which includes products focused on circular economy and engaging in the proper disposal of 1.5 million tons of plastic waste over the next ten years.
Braskem and Casa dos Ventos have formally joined the Global Compact and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. This partnership, together with the Braskem initiatives for the coming decades is in line with the UN's 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement for the control of climate change impacts.
