Braskem Achieves More Than Two-Thirds of Its 2030 Decarbonization Objective

Braskem has already achieved more than two-thirds of its objective of reducing absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from its operations by 15% by 2030. This progress is the result of the company's Industrial Decarbonization Program, which has already implemented initiatives responsible for reducing more than 1.2 million tons of CO²e per year.
This milestone comes at a time when emissions reduction is becoming increasingly relevant to industrial investment decisions, driven by factors such as energy efficiency, climate regulation, and competitiveness. In this context, Braskem's strategy seeks to combine lower carbon intensity with long-term operational and financial gains.
"Decarbonization is not a future agenda for Braskem. It is already taking place across our operations through projects that reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency, and strengthen business competitiveness. Our focus is to accelerate solutions capable of generating environmental and economic value simultaneously," said Gustavo Checcucci, Braskem's Director of Energy and Industrial Decarbonization.
Created in 2021, the Industrial Decarbonization Program is structured around two complementary pillars: strengthening climate management culture, governance, and processes, and implementing initiatives focused on continuous improvement, energy efficiency, electrification, and energy matrix transformation. The program also includes internal carbon pricing mechanisms that support investment decisions and project prioritization.
This movement reflects a trend observed across various industrial sectors. As climate regulations advance and the pursuit of greater operational efficiency intensifies, companies have accelerated investments in solutions that combine emissions reductions, energy security, and competitiveness.
In this context, Braskem has been reconfiguring the infrastructure of its industrial assets. One of the main examples is the Vesta Project, located in the ABC Paulista region, which replaced steam turbines with high-efficiency electric motors supported by a cogeneration plant fueled by hydrogen-rich residual gas. The initiative reduced emissions by approximately 100,000 tons of CO²e per year, while also achieving a 7.3% improvement in energy efficiency and an 11% reduction in water consumption at the facility, demonstrating the financial and environmental viability of large-scale industrial modernization.
Also in the state of São Paulo, at its Paulínia facility, the company plans to install a boiler powered by renewable electricity, which is expected to reduce CO²e emissions by approximately 65%. The solution will replace part of the steam currently generated from fossil fuels, with operations scheduled to begin in 2027.
At the Triunfo Petrochemical Complex, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Braskem has begun using biomethane to partially replace natural gas in its operations. The fuel is supplied by Ultragaz and produced from organic waste at the Minas do Leão landfill. The initiative will serve as a model for potential replication at other industrial facilities.
Another milestone achieved by the program was the complete replacement of fossil natural gas with eucalyptus biomass for steam production at the PVC plant in Marechal Deodoro, Alagoas. Significant efficiency gains were also achieved through electrification, replacing a turbine with approximately 20% efficiency with an electric motor exceeding 90% efficiency. Additional benefits include a reduction of approximately 150,000 tons of CO²e per year, representing a decrease of around 30% in Braskem's GHG emissions in the state compared to 2020 levels.
"Decarbonization is part of the company's operational strategy. The results achieved so far demonstrate that it is possible to advance the energy transition in a consistent manner while generating returns for the business," added Checcucci.
