Braskem at COP30: Industry as Part of the Solution
Company highlights topics such as bioeconomy, decarbonization, and energy transition for a low-carbon future

COP30 will take place from November 10 to 21 in Pará, Brazil, with the main goal of advancing international commitments to curb the rise in the planet's average temperature, focusing primarily on reducing carbon dioxide (CO²) emissions. Braskem, a global petrochemical company that develops sustainable chemical and plastic solutions to improve people's lives, will participate in the event and reaffirm its role as a transformative agent in the sustainable development of the industry, aiming to achieve climate neutrality.
During the first week of the Conference, the company will address topics such as the Brazilian bioeconomy, sustainable carbon, and pathways to decarbonization in panels hosted at the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) space. On November 13, the strategic role of bioeconomy in the low-carbon transition will be discussed by Antonio Queiroz, Vice President of Innovation and Sustainable New Business Development. The following day, Gustavo Checcucci, Director of Energy and Industrial Decarbonization, will share Braskem's pathways to decarbonizing the chemical industry and achieving climate neutrality through innovative solutions.
The journey toward sustainable development
Braskem recognizes the role of bioeconomy as a strategic driver for the country's decarbonization and will highlight at COP30 the importance of using renewable raw materials in the production of chemicals and materials. When integrated into industry, bioeconomy enables the creation of new sustainable carbon cycles, where renewable raw materials replace fossil inputs and drive the transition to a low-carbon economy.
For over 15 years, the company has been a global leader in the production of biopolymers, such as I'm greenT bio-based polyethylene, a renewable plastic made from sugarcane ethanol. As the plant grows, it absorbs CO² from the atmosphere, which is then incorporated into the plastic resin. Since 2010, this process has enabled the absorption of 4.6 million tons of CO²-equivalent to the emissions of a car making one million complete trips around the planet Earth.
COP30 will also be a moment to discuss the importance of public policies that increase demand for more sustainable products and strengthen market supply. "It will be essential for public policies to encourage the growing use of renewables, reduce biomass acquisition costs, and promote research, innovation, and development of bio-based materials," explains Queiroz.
"COP30 will be an opportunity to formalize the pathways toward sustainable development. Expanding the supply of bioproducts that help tackle climate change and establishing a favorable regulatory environment are key points to be discussed at this time," says Jorge Soto, Braskem's Director of Sustainable Development.
Another highlight Braskem will bring to the event is its energy transition agenda. The company has an Industrial Decarbonization Program and several initiatives focused on continuous improvement, carbon neutralization, energy efficiency, electrification, and increasing the share of low-carbon energy sources.
"We developed, in partnership with Siemens Energy, the Vesta Project-a cogeneration plant at the ABC Petrochemical Complex in São Paulo, which uses hydrogen-rich residual gas to generate electricity and thermal energy with high efficiency and reliability, reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions from operations," says Checcucci. "Additionally, we have a biomass project developed in partnership with Veolia, which replaces fossil sources with renewable biomass for steam generation at the Alagoas plant," he adds.
