Edukatu provides new content on recycling and the water crisis

The platform, promoted by Akatu Institute in partnership with Braskem, reached the mark of 20,000 members in 2015

São Paulo, June 6, 2016 - Edukatu, the first online learning network on conscious consumption and sustainability in Brazil, will provide this year roughly 20 new content items on topics such as recycling and water crisis, among others. To stimulate learning and interaction on the platform, the material will be presented using infographics, games, animations, text, and lesson plans. Once released, all content is freely available on the online platform (www.edukatu.org.br) to encourage the exchange of knowledge and practice of on conscious consumption among teachers and students of primary schools throughout Brazil.

The interest and concern with sustainability issues resulted in an 83% increase in the average monthly page views in the period 2014-2015. In addition to the high number of visits, the number of subscribers also doubled in 2015, reaching the mark of 20,000 members from over 2,000 schools in 27 states. Of these, about 7,000 were directly involved in intervention projects in their school communities, mobilizing approximately 43,000 people for conscious consumption.

Among the strategies applied to expand the scope of Edukatu is the blended learning-based mobilization of teachers and students in Alagoas, in partnership with the Lagoa Viva Institute - a program that promotes workshops dedicated to environmental education to support the restoration and conservation of the environment, generation income in the population, and promotion of local culture in Maceió (AL). The strategy is also being put into practice in São Paulo, in partnership with three regional boards of education in the municipality (Jacana/Tremembé, Campo Limpo, and Capela do Socorro).

The mobilization campaign "A Natureza das Coisas" ("The Nature of Things 2015"), in turn, created to encourage the discussion and analysis of the impacts of the life cycle of products, ranging from production to use and disposal, involving schools from all over Brazil, reached over 10,000 people. At this edition, three professors were awarded, one from São Paulo and two from Alagoas. You can watch the video report on the winning school project on https://youtu.be/m0TTwWb5wDo.

Braskem, the largest petrochemical company in the Americas, and the Akatu Institute promote the platform with support from HP, Cargill Foundation, Sabesp, Costa Brava, KPMG, and Grupo Mais Unidos, as well as the institutional support of the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Education.
