ANM reconsiders demands made on Braskem in Maceió

National Mining Agency keeps Company's original plan of closing mine

The National Mining Agency (Agência Nacional de Mineração, ANM) has accepted Braskem's request to reconsider demands submitted by the Company for additional measures to the rock-salt mine closure plan in Maceió (State of Alagoas [AL]). Such additional measures could result in an estimated cost of approximately BRL 3 billion, according to Braskem.

ANM's reconsideration maintains the implementation of the measures laid out in the original mine closure plan proposed by Braskem, which had already provisioned an amount of BRL 1.2 billion.

In May 2019, Braskem halted salt-rock extraction in Maceió. The company hired renowned international specialists and institutions, such as the Institute of Geomechanics of Leipzig, in Germany, and received recommendations to implement a plan to safely close the mine, which was submitted to ANM.

In a company statement, Braskem informed that, "considering that the mine closure plan is a dynamic process with complex execution, ANM will continue to monitor the results of the actions of closing and monitoring the salt mines carried out by the Company and may make further assessments and demands in the future".
