Braskem presents 1st edition of Virada Sustentável in Rio de Janeiro

On June 9-11, Rio de Janeiro and tourists will be able to learn more about Braskem's initiatives related to sustainability.

Braskem, the largest petrochemical company in the Americas, will be bringing a series of attractions to Rio de Janeiro's first Virada Sustentável. The event is an annual mobilization and education festival that aims to expand information on sustainability, based on a more positive approach to the population, using art and culture as the main awareness tools.

On June 9-11, Rio de Janeiro and tourists will be able to learn more about Braskem's initiatives related to sustainability. One of the attractions will address, in a playful way, the importance of society's knowledge and engagement in relation to climate change. An inflatable dome, called the Visual Dome, will be set up at the Mauá Square to provide a broader perspective on climate change, featuring technologies that are used to mitigate impacts, and how each can do their part. In a three-minute video, images projected in 360 degrees will create an impactful experience on the transformations caused by the greenhouse effect.

The company also promotes concerts of the Som+eu project (social initiative for the musical training of 500 public school students from Duque de Caxias and surrounding areas) on June 10, at the Mauá Square, and on June 11, in Madureira Park. The distribution of seedlings of the Forest Factory Institute is scheduled for the 10th, at Plaza Square, from 11 am to 1 pm, and in Madureira Park, from 3 pm to 5 pm.

During the Virada Sustentável, Braskem will be delivering to the city of Rio de Janeiro the prototypes of the winning furniture of the Design Challenge, which invited university students to create new solutions for urban furniture using only plastic as a raw material. The furniture will be installed in Ernesto Nazareth Urban Park, where the Urban Activation Center (NAU) is also located, in the area of Porto Maravilha. Furthermore, in the same places, the company will also deliver bicycle stands produced from recycling plastic bags.

About Som+Eu

The Som+Eu is a free social initiative, conducted by Braskem, which offers musical education and access to culture while encouraging the musical training of 500 students aged 6-16, from public schools near the Company's industrial units in the Campos Elíseos Petrochemical Complex (RJ). It also fosters entrepreneurship as a way to generate income, as the students are able to create the instruments and sell them. The project activities take place in several districts of Duque de Caxias (RJ), and students have classes in classical music. In addition, the Tubonic Orchestra was created, consisting of several alternative instruments made with PVC. A number of instruments were created, such as the tube saxophone, pan flute, chinelofone, fife, key curtain, grille guitar, etc. In addition to the innovation in the generation of sounds and melodies with plastic parts and PP bottle caps, the initiative encourages entrepreneurship as a way to generate income, as the students can create the instruments and sell them. The instruments used were produced with PVC, as a means of stimulating sustainability, and made by the students themselves.

About the Design Challenge

This action, promoted by Braskem, challenged university students to create new solutions for urban furniture using only plastic as raw material. The first edition of the project, held in Rio de Janeiro, was held late last year, with the main theme focusing on urban furniture for spaces in transformation. The Challenge awarded students from Federal Fluminense University (UFF), in the category of Food and Artistic Presentations, and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in the Work and Leisure category. The winners presented pieces with a bold design, blending functionality, sustainability, and innovation.
