Innovation in stretch film with recycled content

Braskem and machine manufacturer SML have joined forces to bring to the market an innovation which will ensure that recycled raw materials are used more.

With processing technology from SML and post-consumer recycled resin (PCR) from Braskem, the companies are producing a stretch film with recycled content, high performance and superior quality for the first time. A live demonstration of this innovation was done at the 2022 K Fair on the largest machine exhibited at the event.

The use of post-consumer recycled material in this type of film represents an important contribution to the circular economy, as it saves resources and minimizes waste. Stretch film complies with the demands of the market with the PCR content required by brand owners and prescribed in the applicable laws.

"The stretch film produced in partnership with SML illustrates how Braskem has been able to raise the quality of the PCR resin and what is already viable today. By combining a Wenew product with Braskem's portfolio, we can obtain an extremely high-quality film, which helps to create totally new perspectives for the use of recycled materials in a wide variety of applications," stated Carlos André Silva, Application Engineer at Braskem.

According to Thomas Rauscher, Stretch Film Product Manager at SML, it seemed almost impossible at the start of this project to find a sustainable and cost-effective solution, especially for products with reduced thickness. "After two years of working closely with them, we can now offer a solution that satisfies the demand for PCR resin in the production of stretch film, which will undoubtedly please end users," he claimed. "This is a reasonable response in terms of both raw material and production," he added.
