Adoption Fair Encourages Responsible Dog and Cat Adoption

"Focinho Responsável" maintains an online channel featuring profiles of available pets; animals receive clinical support for three months after adoption.

Maceió, February 24, 2025 - The "Focinho Responsável " Channel hosted another pet adoption fair on Friday (20). The event took place in the common area of a supermarket in the Serraria neighborhood of Maceió, offering the community an opportunity to support responsible pet ownership and connect with animals waiting for a new home.

For 51-year-old cook Josenilda da Silva, the fair was the perfect chance to adopt a cat and provide companionship for the feline she already had. "I chose to adopt here because I wanted a female cat that was already spayed, and I also learned that the project's caregivers could help bring her to my home," she said.

Arthur Oliveira, coordinator of external activities for "Focinho Responsável" , explained that the role of the fairs goes beyond the adoptions that happen during the event itself. "We use these opportunities to talk about the benefits of having a pet at home-bringing more love into the household and strengthening family bonds. We also highlight that adoption is an excellent way to give previously abandoned animals a second chance in a new home," he said.

Online Channel Makes Adoption Easier

Those who couldn't attend the fair but are interested in meeting animals available for adoption can visit the Instagram profile @focinhoresponsavel . The channel continuously shares profiles of the pets, along with information and guidance about each one.

Currently, 182 animals are waiting for a new home. All of them have been vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and dewormed. "Focinho Responsável" provides transportation to bring the animal to the adopter's home, as well as free veterinary support during the first three months after adoption.

The channel also offers a trial adaptation period of up to three days, allowing families and pets to get to know each other before making a final decision. If the adoption is not finalized, the program ensures the animal's safe return.

Support for Animals

"Focinho Responsável" is part of the Animal Support Program, a partnership between Braskem and the Research and Extension Group in Equids and Integrative Health at the Federal University of Alagoas (Grupequi-Ufal). The initiative was launched in 2020 to support families relocated through the Financial Compensation Program (PCF). For more than five years, it has provided temporary shelter, veterinary care, vaccinations, and spay/neuter services. The program has also rescued abandoned or stray animals in vacant areas.

Currently, the program cares for 493 animals, primarily dogs and cats, 182 of which are available for adoption: 139 cats, 42 dogs, and one horse. Since its creation, Focinho Responsável has organized 36 adoption fairs, participated in more than 250 educational and community outreach activities, and helped 1,064 animals find new homes.
