Bom Conselho and St. Anthony of Padua Church: Historic Properties Restored and Under Ongoing Monitoring
Original features are preserved in buildings overseen by a specialized cultural heritage team.
Maceió, February 12, 2026 - A team of specialists hired by Braskem is working to maintain the integrity of historically significant properties located in the Bebedouro, Mutange, and Bom Parto neighborhoods, in accordance with the guidelines outlined in the Cultural Heritage Assets Dossier, prepared by university professors with academic expertise in the field. To date, 36 properties designated by the Municipality as having Historic Value have undergone structural integrity interventions and continue to be monitored by a team specialized in cultural heritage preservation.
Among the properties that have received restoration work are Bom Conselho Palace, Nunes Leite Manor House, St. Anthony of Padua Church, the Green and Pink Twin Houses, the Teachers' Association (SINTEAL), the Environmental Institute (IMA), and Our Lady of Bom Parto Parish. The restoration efforts revealed the construction techniques used in each building, as well as unique details about their original features.
During the works, door and window openings were reconstructed; walls and roofs were restored, including waterproofing and slab cleaning; metal structural reinforcements and bracing were installed; and façade damage was repaired. Routine upkeep measures are also carried out, including cleaning and pest control, along with property security support provided by professionals working around the clock, daily drone flights, and camera and alarm systems.
Specialists identified more than one construction method, such as mixed wattle-and-daub with rammed brick masonry, as well as earthen masonry. The taipa (wattle-and-daub) walls that were identified have been preserved, many of them retaining their original painted finishes. On the floors, brick structures, possibly original, were found beneath the current flooring. The variety of hydraulic tile patterns also helps tell the story of these buildings.
Cultural Heritage
The restoration work follows best practices in historic preservation, is conducted with the Municipality's authorization, and is overseen by Braskem's technical team, composed of architects specializing in cultural heritage.
In addition to the ongoing efforts to maintain the structural stability of historically significant properties identified by the Municipal Institute for Urban and Environmental Research, Planning, and Licensing (IPLAM), these properties are also included in the Cultural Heritage Assets Dossier. The dossier aims to preserve the memory of these buildings by compiling documentary and visual records of their construction details and individual histories.
The preservation of cultural heritage within the relocation areas is provided for under the Socio-Environmental Agreement entered into by the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office (MPF) and Braskem, with the participation of the State Public Prosecutor's Office (MPE) and the adherence of the Municipality of Maceió.
