The first phase of the works on Avenida Durval de Góes Monteiro nears completion

- This stretch, spanning 2.2 kilometers, has been enhanced with the addition of two new vehicle lanes, accessible sidewalks, and an advanced electrical and lighting infrastructure.
- These improvements are a key component of the Socio-Environmental Agreement, aimed at boosting urban mobility.
Maceió, March 18th, 2024 - the expansion of Avenida Durval de Góes Monteiro, a vital urban artery, includes the construction of two new lanes for vehicles in both directions. The first phase of this project focuses on a stretch from the city center to the airport, covering 2.2 kilometers. It is close to completion and will soon offer the public a new lateral road, accessible sidewalks, and modernized electrical and lighting systems. Additionally, the avenue now benefits from an advanced traffic monitoring system.
In the same section of Durval de Góes Monteiro, in the opposite direction (Airport-Downtown), the work is underway, and it is expected to be completed by the beginning of May. This first stage of the work is part of a project to construct new side roads along 6 kilometers of the avenue.
Sidewalks with tactile flooring, of the directional and alert types, have also been installed to guide people with visual impairments, as well as ramps for access by people with reduced mobility. In this first delivery, the road also receives new lighting, with 59 new light poles installed and equipped with LED lamps. The electrical network has been modernized to reduce short circuits and can reduce the risk of power interruption by up to 60% in the event of light pole falls.
To allow for smoother traffic flow, an intelligent monitoring system has been installed and has been in operation since May 2023. From the PRF viaduct to the Praça do Centenário, 30 sets of traffic lights have integrated cameras that identify the volume of vehicles in circulation. These devices use Artificial Intelligence to autonomously adapt the timing of the traffic lights according to traffic.
Mobility Package
The implementation of measures to improve urban mobility is included in the Socio-Environmental Agreement Term signed in December 2020 by the Brazilian Federal Public Ministry (MPF) and Braskem, with the participation of the State Public Ministry (MPE) and the adhesion of the Municipality of Maceió. The works are planned by the Municipality and executed by specialized companies contracted by Braskem. The interventions are supervised by the public authorities and are expected to last about three and a half years. The budget is BRL 360 million, and the value is adjusted annually. The projects foresee the construction, expansion, or recovery of 33.4 kilometers of roads; implementation of almost 37 kilometers of accessible sidewalks and bike lanes; requalification of public walkways and parking lots; new lighting and electrical network; stormwater drainage; and an intelligent traffic light system already in operation.
Braskem's commitments to Maceió
To facilitate understanding and monitoring of these and other actions and programs developed since 2019, the company has compiled on a platform the 10 commitments to Maceió, focusing on social, urban, and environmental fronts. The actions for the improvement of urban mobility are foreseen in the commitment of compensation and requalification of social living spaces of the affected areas and urban mobility.
The initiatives related to the 10 commitments are the result of the five agreements signed between Braskem and the authorities in recent years. The details of the actions are available at www.braskem.com/compromissosmaceio .
