New section of the Durval de Góes Monteiro expansion opens to traffic

  • There are now approximately 2.2 kilometers of expanded lanes in both directions, plus an additional kilometer in the downtown-airport direction

Maceió, January 27, 2026 - Another section of the expansion of Avenida Durval de Góes Monteiro has been completed and will be opened to vehicle and pedestrian traffic this Tuesday (27). The newly completed phase covers 1 kilometer in the downtown-airport direction, stretching from the Tupan interchange to Stella Maris Steakhouse. Construction work continues in the opposite direction (airport-downtown) along the same stretch.

The Durval expansion project is divided into two phases. The first phase, a 2.2-kilometer stretch between Parque do Horto and the Tupan interchange, was delivered in 2024. Once all work is completed, a total of six kilometers of roadway will have been expanded. The project includes the construction of new service roads, accessible sidewalks, a stormwater drainage system, a new power grid and public lighting, as well as expanded parking areas.

Artificial intelligence-powered cameras have also been installed along the entire avenue and operate 24 hours a day, calculating optimal traffic signal timing in real time at each intersection. Traffic is monitored at the city's Operations Control Center (CCO).

Pedestrian bridge and bike lane

The avenue has also gained a 5.7-kilometer bike lane, running from the BR-316 overpass to the area near Parque do Horto, along Avenida Fernandes Lima. A new pedestrian bridge, 61 meters long and 5.7 meters high, is currently being installed near the INSS building (downtown-bound), in the Canaã area. The bridge will feature stairways, a covered structure, and two elevators designed to ensure accessibility for people with reduced mobility.

Mobility package

The project is part of a broader effort to improve urban mobility in Maceió and is included in the Socio-Environmental Agreement signed in December 2020 by the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office (MPF) and Braskem, with the participation of the State Public Prosecutor's Office (MPE) and the Municipality of Maceió.

Urban mobility initiatives are moving forward with an initial budget of BRL 360 million, adjusted annually and funded by Braskem. All interventions are planned by the municipality and overseen by public authorities. The projects include the construction, expansion, or rehabilitation of 33.4 kilometers of roadways; the implementation of nearly 37 kilometers of accessible sidewalks and bike lanes; upgrades to public walkways and parking areas; new lighting and electrical infrastructure; stormwater drainage; and an intelligent traffic signal system that is already in operation.
