Progress of works to improve urban mobility in Maceió

Maceió, December 12, 2024 - Efforts to enhance urban mobility in Maceió are progressing through projects and initiatives to improve traffic flow and ensure safety for drivers and pedestrians. Five projects were completed. These include the construction of a side road on Avenida Menino Marcelo, the first stage of works on Avenida Durval de Góes Monteiro, the implementation of an intelligent traffic light system, the Binário and Ladeira do Calmnon, and the recovery of streets in the region of Chã da Jaqueira and Chã de Bebedouro. Other initiatives are still underway.

With a budget of BRL 360 million, annually updated, the projects include constructing, expanding, or repairing 33.4 kilometers of roads; installing nearly 37 kilometers of accessible sidewalks and bike lanes; upgrading public walkways and parking areas; adding new lighting and electrical infrastructure; implementing stormwater drainage systems; and operating an intelligent traffic light system already in place.

The implementation of measures to enhance urban mobility is part of the Socio-Environmental Agreement signed in December 2020 by the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) and Braskem, with participation from the State Public Ministry (MPE) and support from the Municipality of Maceió. These initiatives are planned by the Municipality, carried out by specialized companies engaged by Braskem, and supervised by public authorities.

Completed projects
Avenida Menino Marcelo, one of the city's main road corridors, is receiving a new side road with two parallel 1.8 km lanes heading towards the city center. This section features accessible sidewalks, tactile paving, access ramps for people with reduced mobility, and 1.3 km of a bike path lane. The area has undergone upgrades in rainwater drainage, the creation of new parking spaces, and modernization of its electrical grid and public lighting systems.

Calmon Binary and Chã de Jaqueira System
Interventions on the streets of Doutor Antônio Nunes Leite, João Leite Sobrinho, Pedro Beltrão and sections of Cônego Costa and Ladeira do Calmon are underway. The roads received new paving and signage. On a dual carriageway, parallel and nearby roads are used as one-way streets. For Calmon, the Dr. Antônio Nunes Leite and João Leite Sobrinho streets now operate in the direction of Fernandes Lima-Bebedouro only. On the first, traffic is exclusive to buses. In addition to providing more fluid and safe traffic, the system optimizes public transportation.

In the Chã da Jaqueira and Chã de Bebedouro regions, 8 km of 12 streets and avenues received new paving and were signposted. The roads connect the upper and lower parts of the city.
In Bebedouro, two-way streets were made one-way with the implementation of Binário.

Technology
Smart traffic lights were installed to improve traffic flow on Durval de Góes Monteiro and Fernandes Lima avenues. The equipment features attached cameras that use artificial intelligence to calculate the appropriate interval for each intersection in real time, 24/7. Furthermore, the Operational Control Center (CCO) was also installed, from which technicians and agents from the Municipal Department of Transportation and Traffic (DMTT) monitor traffic.
As part of the traffic technology improvements, high-performance video surveillance cameras are being installed at 26 locations across the city. They will assist in monitoring traffic in 74 lanes.

Ongoing actions
Durval de Góes Monteiro Avenue, one of the most important connections between the upper and the central regions of Maceió, will feature two new parallel lanes in both directions. Upon project completion, 6 km of new roads will feature accessible sidewalks, a bike path, a modern stormwater drainage system, an upgraded electrical network and public lighting, and expanded parking facilities.

The work was divided into two stages. The first was completed on a 2.2 km stretch between Parque do Horto and the Tupan Interchange.  The second is underway on a 3.8 km stretch between the Tupan Interchange and the BR-316 overpass.  The bike path, constructed along the central median of the entire avenue, has been completed.

Work is underway on a new corridor that will link Durval de Góes Monteiro and Menino Marcelo avenues. The connection will span 2.3 km and include two lanes in each direction, a central median, a roundabout, two bridges, bike paths, accessible sidewalks, bus stops, and advanced public lighting.

Professor José da Silveira Camerino Street and the surrounding area will undergo upgrades to improve mobility in the region. The Camerino System is made up of three projects: road widening; the implementation of the North Connection, which involves constructing a three-lane road to link Durval de Góes Monteiro Avenue near Parque do Horto with streets in the Pinheiro neighborhood; and the South Connection, which will create access routes connecting the Teobaldo slope to Cambona, Farol, and Afrânio Lages Avenue (East-West).
