Complete shutdown of rock salt extraction
In May 2019, rock salt extraction in Maceió was completely ceased, consequently halting production at the Maceió plant. This partially affected the operation of the PVC plant in Marechal Deodoro and operations at the Camaçari Complex in Bahia. Despite the shutdown, Braskem committed not to make layoffs, involving the team in maintenance services and professional training programs.
In early 2021, the factory resumed operations with salt acquired from Chile. The operations involve over 60 companies, employing more than 12,000 people, including 750 direct employees of Braskem and 3,300 subcontractors.
The definitive closure of the wells has been underway since November 2019 when Braskem presented measures to the Brazilian National Mining Agency (ANM) to definitively cease salt extraction and close and fill wells in Maceió, prioritizing safety.
Braskem supplied the necessary resources and the entire planning for accomplishing the said efforts in concert with the Civil Defense and other authorities.
