Braskem Partners with Università Ca'Foscari Venezia to Develop a CO2 Conversion Technology

São Paulo, August 14th, 2024 - Braskem, the largest producer of thermoplastic resins in the Americas, has announced a partnership with Università Ca' Foscari Venezia in Italy to develop catalytic technological routes for converting CO2 into high-value organic carbonates. The three-year partnership entails Braskem's participation in the joint development of the technology through bench-scale trials with the Italian university, also conducting experiments in its own laboratories.
Organic carbonates have applications in established markets, as well as emerging uses like electrolytes for vehicle batteries. The technology to be developed has the potential not only to reduce the emissions from chemical processes, using the CO2 previously captured from point sources, but also aims to deliver products with a lower carbon footprint compared to traditional methods (fossil-based).
"The project is very important, because it aims to contribute to industrial decarbonization, enhancing the sustainability of petrochemical processes. This technology has the potential to incorporate 100% of the CO 2 molecule into the final product, resulting in higher yields and allowing that the CO 2 is not emitted to the atmosphere", says Gus Hutras, Braskem's Global Director of Process Technology.
"This joint research project represents a fantastic example of how academic research in green chemistry can favor university-industry collaboration with companies willing to take on the challenge of developing new cleaner and more sustainable processes. In this case, not only is CO 2 converted into valuable products, but this will also be done by a more energy and resource-efficient method", says Professor Alvise Perosa from Università Ca' Foscari Venezia.
Braskem aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 15% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. It considers innovation as a strategic pillar in all investment decisions, facilitating the transition to a carbon-neutral circular economy through the development of increasingly cleaner solutions. "Our ambition is to significantly reduce CO 2 emissions and enhance the sustainability of our products", adds Hutras.
