Accelerating the Transition to Renewables: Braskem's I'm greenTM bio-based Supports TE Connectivity's Sustainable Heat Shrink Tubing Innovation
The switch from fossil to bio-based materials illustrates the industry's response to the growing demand for sustainable solutions.

Braskem (B3: BRKM3, BRKM5, and BRKM6; NYSE: BAK; LATIBEX: XBRK), a global market leader in biopolymers and the proud creator of the I'm greenTM bio-based brand, is supporting TE Connectivity-one of the world's leading manufacturers of connectivity and sensor solutions-in their journey to bring more renewable innovation to the electronics industry. TE Connectivity is now using I'm greenT bio-based materials to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and advance more sustainable product portfolios. The company has released a new whitepaper, "Bio-Based Heat Shrink Tubing: Materials Innovation for Next-Generation Sealing and Protection of Electronic Components," which highlights why bio-based materials are becoming a powerful enabler in this transition.
The shift from fossil-based to bio-based solutions for heat shrink tubing-essential for protecting electrical components from heat, water, and other environmental conditions-reflects growing expectations across the value chain. As climate change accelerates regulatory requirements and customer demand for lower-carbon solutions, renewable materials such as I'm greenT bio-based polymers are helping industries rethink how essential components are made. Heat shrink tubing is widely used in Industrial and Commercial Transportation, Automotive, Aerospace, and Defense, making material innovation a key lever for meaningful climate action.
Key Highlights from the Whitepaper
- Renewable Materials Innovation: TE's new BIOFUSE Tubing portfolio-Bio-Innovation CAP (BICAP) and Bio-Innovation Splice Sealing (BISS) products-is made with plant-based, renewable polymers that support lower-carbon performance.
- Performance Without Compromise: The bio-based tubes deliver durability, flame retardancy, and electrical insulation comparable to traditional fossil-based alternatives.
- Designed for Compliance: The products meet stringent global standards, including UL224 and California Proposition 65 requirements.
I'm greenTM bio-based solutions are produced from ethanol sourced from sugarcane, a renewable raw material that naturally absorbs CO² during its growth. By replacing fossil feedstocks like naphtha, this plant-based route helps create plastics with a significantly reduced carbon footprint. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) across the full production chain-cradle to Braskem's gate-confirms the positive climate impact and the meaningful contribution to lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
"TE's commitment to innovation and sustainability is at the heart of this development," said Mohammed Nawaz, Director of Engineering, Performance Materials at TE Connectivity. "This whitepaper not only showcases our technical advancements but also reinforces our ongoing efforts in shaping a more sustainable future for electronics manufacturing." The whitepaper is available for download on TE Connectivity's website.
As Braskem celebrates 15 years of I'm greenTM bio-based, the milestone highlights how the brand has helped redefine what renewable plastics can achieve. Over the past decade and a half, I'm greenTM bio-based has become a trusted symbol of sustainable innovation-enabling customers to diversify their feedstock sources, reduce carbon emissions, and adopt solutions that make a difference without compromising on performance. This anniversary honors the brand's legacy, while reaffirming its commitment to supporting the global transition toward a more sustainable and renewable future.
