A Brazilian innovation, originated from sugarcane and with a mission in space. Braskem's Green Plastic is one of the 40 Brazilian inventions presented at the new exhibition of "Museu do Amanhã" (Museum of Tomorrow), in Rio de Janeiro, called "Innovations - Brazilian-style Creations," which is sponsored by FINEP. The exhibition will take visitors on a journey to the world of domestic creations, with an emphasis on technological innovations and ideas that transform and benefit people in Brazil and the world. The exhibition will be held until October 22.

Green Plastic began to be manufactured in 2010 and was the first polyethylene from renewable sources to be produced on an industrial scale in the world, identified with the I'm GreenT label. The biopolymer, derived from sugarcane ethanol, offers environmental benefits by contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, as it captures and retains CO2 from the atmosphere during its manufacturing cycle. Currently, more than 150 brands use resin around the world in food packaging, personal care products, and even auto parts.

Brazilian innovation has reached even space. In 2016, a partnership with the startup Made in Space, a U.S.-based NASA supplier, allowed the Green Plastic to be used in 3D printing applications on the International Space Station. Now, astronauts are using the resin for tool printing, repair of parts, storage jars, and other objects, thus contributing to cost savings and greater autonomy of space missions in the future.
